Directorate of Academic Planning

Welcome to Godfrey Okoye University Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance.

 This Directorate was established to collate, manage, and interpret data to guide the Academic development of university and to ensure compliance with the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) Minimum  Academic  Standards. It enhances efficiency in teaching, learning and research in the university and also ensures dissemination and publication of relevant information and knowledge.

In order to ensure the continuous sustainable growth of the pristine university, The Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance has outlined strategic procedures and systems to ensure the University meets its target to be the best in education.

The key functions of the Directorate shall be discussed in the categories below.

Planning

  1. Preparation of the university’s annual recurrent budget.
  2. Projection of students’ enrolment figures, corresponding staff strength, and distribution of students according to state of origin and sex for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  3. Computation of full-time equivalent (FTE) for all programmes.
  4. Preparation of the university calendar for stable academic delivery.
  5. Initiating the review of curriculum in line with trends in the academic world, as well as working with faculty to prepare, review, and monitor their academic plans and identify areas for potential development.

Quality Assurance

The Directorate promotes quality of teaching, learning, and research in the University through periodic evaluation of academic activities in the University in the following ways:

  1. Coordinating the preparation of the Academic Brief and guiding units of the university on the operations of the Academic Brief.
  2. Periodic analysis of performance evaluation of academic programmes.
  3. Analysis of students’ enrolment figures and ensuring compliance with guidelines such as admission quota, teacher /student ratio, and science /arts ratio.
  4. Feasibility studies for the establishment of new academic programme(s).
  5. Use of data collected for making projections and advising the university appropriately.

Publications and Statistics

The Directorate is responsible for the coordination and collation of information to the NUC for National planning. This can be achieved through:

  1. Maintaining a database on students and staff statistics for use in planning, budgeting, and other requirements.
  2. Periodic statistics to bodies like the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Manpower Board, Statistics output to individual researchers on demand.
  3. Periodic updates and analysis of data from relevant university bodies for the internal evaluation of the performance status of the university on all the NUC-approved funding parameters and other guidelines.
  4. Publication of university records, statistics, and research reports.
  5. Documenting and storing information on academic programmes of the university, as well as student academic and personal records.

Liaison, Programme Establishment and Accreditation

The Directorate is expected to liaise between the university and the regulatory body, in this context, the NUC. It seeks clarification from the NUC and professional bodies on academic matters and forwards same to the appropriate section of the university.

Strategic Planning

The universities are expected to have a strategic plan in place. The Directorate coordinates all the activities to ensure that every facet of the university community is represented in the decision making process. It is the duty of the directorate to ensure that planning efforts are properly focused towards achieving the goals of the organization. The formulation of a plan starts with the design, environmental analysis, and review of vision/mission, establishment of goals, strategy development/options and plan development. The planning unit would have to guide the university at every stage of the plan development.

2020-30 Strategic Plan

The paramount aim of the Directorate is to carve a niche and maintain sustainable development. There is a need for developing a competitive advantage for the purpose of quality education, marketing and image management. To achieve this plan, the Directorate has outlined the following:

  1. Continue to refine programmes and engage in teaching practices that help to reduce the learning gap and the number of students who are below proficiency.
  2. Create a school environment and culture that focuses on value learning.
  3. Increase parent & stakeholder involvement in student learning.
  4. Implement instruction that engages students (Entrepreneurship, Research and Development, overseas training etc.)
  5.  Increase student leadership opportunities.
  6. Continue to update library/technology (ICT) needs.
  7. Refine and seek out a range of services for failing students.
  8. More professional development (CCNA, ICAN, ICDL etc) to match content area needs.
  9. Continue the mentorship programme.
  10. Continue the development and establishment of leading programmes to enable student employability.
  11. Clarify processes for academic programme development and review.
  12. Collaboration with other colleges and sectors.
  13. Acceleration and combined undergraduate/graduate education (Summer School/online teaching).
  14. Consider/develop online learning for Postgraduate/ Distance Learning and periodic review and assessment of the plan to ensure growth and development.
